Seto City, located about 30 minutes by train from Nagoya, is one of Japan's leading ceramics production areas. With a history of pottery making spanning over a thousand years, it is one of the centers of Japanese ceramic culture and the origin of the word “setomono,” which in Japanese refers to pottery in general. Counted among Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, it has produced vessels in various styles, from everyday tableware to tea ceremony utensils and fine art crafts. Throughout the city, areas with climbing kiln ruins and chimneys remain, dotted with artisan workshops and galleries. Simply walking through the streets lets you feel the “living pottery town.” Seto's charm lies in experiencing the process from clay selection to firing, and encountering the artisans' skills and aesthetic sensibilities through pottery wheel and painting experiences, as well as workshop tours. This is a special town where you can experience the “heart” of Japanese ceramic culture up close.
